Inspired by the visual language of early Macintosh operating systems —which I, thanks to my parents, had access to at a very young age at home— this piece references iconic elements such as the Sad Mac to speculate on what happens inside a computer right before it crashes.
Using glitch as a narrative tool, the work represents the internal buildup of processes that become disordered and overlap until total chaos takes over.
I’m interested in the paradox that emerges there: even in failure, something visually compelling appears. This piece attempts to represent that unexpected beauty that exists in the instant before everything freezes.
This work was presented within the exhibition SCREENSAVERS, hosted by Uncommon Gallery in Seoul, South Korea (20 Feb – 16 Mar 2024), curated by Aleksandra Artamonovskaja with co-curation by UnknownCollector. The programme adopted a 16:9 video format as a critical gesture towards the screensaver genre and featured digital artworks that challenge art’s conventional hierarchies—from a vantage point that already declared: “momentarily diverting gimmick art … take away the music & it’s just a banal screensaver.”
